At my work I manage one person who works on reception. She is a nice person but her attitude is terrible. She takes about 25 paid sick days a year, and when she is there she complains all day every day that she is tired and/or has a headache or her foot hurts or she has a bad tooth etc etc. She constantly looks miserable, rarely smiles and sounds extremely ‘down’ when she answers phones etc. One of my colleagues calls her a dementor because if you speak to her for 5 mins you feel like you’ll never be cheerful again. Several of my colleagues and supervisors have told me we need to let her go but I feel like it would be unfair dismissal as it’s just her personality? She doesn’t have a diagnosis of depression (I subtly asked this one day when she complained she was tired for the 90th time) but what if she is mentally ill?
