After a month of headaches and looking through all of the posts on this sub related to this issue, I have finally found out how to output 4K 120Hz (at least on a monitor) from the new Snapdragon X Surface devices.

Like everyone else on here, I have had little success in trying to achieve this, having only managed 60Hz with washed-out colours via a USB-C to HDMI 2.1 adapter, to getting a random 95Hz with a USB-C to DisplayPort cable.

While an individual mentioned they got it working, they didn’t share the solution, so I’m going to share it instead:

I decided to disable Display Stream Compression (DSC) on my monitor and low and behold my Surface is finally outputting 4K 120Hz with 10-bit colour. To do this I went into the monitor’s OSD, scrolled down to ‘General’, then to ‘DisplayPort Version’, and then set the version to ‘1.4’ (without DSC). This is on an LG 27GP950 and probably applies to it’s sibling models as well.

The cable I am using is the Cable Matters Premium USB-C to DisplayPort 1.4 cable (don’t think the premium bit matters but the braiding is nice).

TL;DR: Use a USB-C to DisplayPort 1.4 cable and disable DSC on your monitor, no success with HDMI adapters unfortunately.
