Hey y‘all! Here’s some news from the Metal Gear Solid speedrun scene which may surprise some readers. In 2011 a runner called Wazaaa made a speedrun single segment of the pc version on easy difficulty using the 2000 released PC version of Metal Gear Solid. It was the fastest run with video proof for ages but hidden as the link was unlisted. Yesterday I found that unlisted video again scrolling old forums for lost knowledge and struck gold. The secret to that runners fast time was mainly one thing, selecting the minimum install option instead of the full install option. A feature that maybe older people that were gaming in the early 2000s are still familiar with.

That knowledge was lost since 2011. some people knew it was possible to do this minimum install but never expected to save such a huge amount of time.

Here’s the full story in video form:

The impact of that knowledge will probably lead to a new MGS PC Any% world record completion on easy below the 34 minute mark. Something the community was looking forward to for a while. On the all bosses category the easy difficulty world record has just recently hit the 56 minute mark and can now potentially go below 54 minutes.

This goes to show how much knowledge may still lie hidden deep in archived forums and behind unlisted videos. I hope this little story finds some people’s curiosity and to have them be inspired to dig for lost knowledge.
