Elon Musk, for a while, has been advocating for working 100 hours a week. Recently, Indian billionaires Bhavish Aggarwal and Narayana Murthy have been pushing for a 70-hour workweek.
All this advanced technology and yet we work like slaves! We had more time for leisure as hunter-gatherers and agriculturalists than we do now. The Industrial Revolution was supposed to liberate us from the drudgery of work and leave us with ample time for leisure but instead gave us child labor and 16-hour workdays.
Decades of labor activism got us “8 hours labor, 8 hours recreation, 8 hours rest” and now billionaires want to take that away from us too!
We have enough advanced technology and resources to feed, clothe, and house every single person on the planet but don’t do it because we would rather spend $2.44 trillion on military.
100 years ago, Bertrand Russell and Keynes predicted technology would gift us 4 hours workday and leave us with ample time for leisure to pursue our creativity, expression, and self-actualization.
Hence, it’s not enough to demand a 40-hour workweek! We should fight for working less and reclaim our right to leisure!
