this is a rant, but i need to get this out somewhere.

The situation which resulted in Chelsea Rebecca from Dead Meat (host of the podcast and occassional KC host) stepping back from the internet is horrible, and I hope that she’s doing ok. However, this reinforces a major issue with Youtube.

Dead Meat has had countless conflicts with Youtube’s broken system before. A channel that covers horror movies was always gonna face pushback from the content system, but this was absolutely ridiculous levels of censorship. From having to blur content to avoid age-restrictions, being forced to remove key context from films (the suicide content in Talk To Me, VHS2 and Smile) and company after company abusing Youtube’s copyright system and taking their ad revenue, no honest platform should have let this continue.

(Dead Meat obviously aren’t the only channel that suffers because of this, this a problem across all channels covering this)

Then, Chelsea criticises how Youtube goes harshly on this content whilst it lets racism and sexism run rampant on the site, those same people start a harassment campaign against her and she has to step back from the internet over it.

I guarantee that Youtube will not be even half as strict with the channels responsible as they were with a channel covering horror media.

With the copyright issues, how come a channel that actually cares about the media it covers, makes the videos transformative and engaging and appreciates the creators of the media they cover get targeted again and again, yet the AI content mills showing a movie in 10 minutes with the wikipedia article playing in the background get away with it?

Then, the harassment campaigns. The fact that grifters have become a subgenre of Youtube itself tells you everything you need to know. Multiple female creators have been bullied in similar ways (Illymation, Jaiden Animations, Erin from Jacksfilms, the list unfortunately goes on) yet Youtube has done nothing to address this problem. The fact that channels like The Quartering, Geeks + Gamers and Think Before You Sleep are still operating shows Youtube never cared.

When is enough gonna be enough? Whilst Youtube has a monopoly on video streaming sites, that shouldn’t be an excuse to allow content like this. If covering horror movies isn’t advertiser friendly, why is actual hate speech and harassment being monetised?

Youtube needs to do something. I knowI’m shouting into a void with this and I know this probably isn’t gonna change anything and I know people have been saying this for years. But this has gone on for too long.
