Earlier this month, Nationals catcher Keibert Ruiz finished a triple shy of the cycle. This is not surprising because so far in his 401 other games, he has also not tripled.

The record for most atbats without ever hitting a triple is 2,079 by fellow catcher Johnny Estrada. Ruiz is up to 1,455 and not getting any faster (0.22 seconds slower to 1st now than his rookie year). Estrada also holds the accompanying record for hits, 576; Ruiz has 360.

Remarkably Ruiz is not the slowest major leaguer 2021-24. That honor belongs to Yasmani Grandal, who has 7 triples but none in the last 4 seasons. Ruiz is tied for 25th slowest, with Salvador Perez and second baseman (??) Spencer Horwitz, slightly faster than Giancarlo Stanton and Wilmer Flores.

This could be an extended fluke similar to Biggio in 1999 or Jeter in 2002 and Ruiz is about to go all Evan Gattis on us, or he just might eclipse 2004 Silver Slugger awardee Estrada in the pantheon of pragmatic players who excelled at stopping at second.
