This LPT comes from an ex British SAS soldier I worked with on a security contract in Afghanistan. He described being a consultant to the BBC in Iraq, escorting a journalist to an Iraqi hospital where some locals had been injured in fighting, and being confronted by a crowd of unruly locals. He was unarmed.

“You look for someone in the crowd who seems like they might have some authority -older, better dressed- and who seems like they’re not as worked up as everyone else. Make eye contact with that person and try to convey “help me out here”. You may only be able to use body language, but you’re basically looking at that one person and trying to get them to intercede on your behalf.”

He said it worked. Considering the alternative of getting torn to pieces, it probably can’t hurt to try,
