If your flight is close to full, most likely they’ll ask at the gate for volunteers to check bags (for free) or will demand it as the boarding process starts and the overhead bins fill up.

When you arrive to the airport, go to the agent assistance line and explain your flight is full and you’re in a later boarding group. That since they’ll be doing gate checking, please would it be possible to check your bag without a fee now instead of lugging it through the airport to the gate.

I’ve only been turned down once in 3 years - in Denver, and that’s unsurprising as everything at that airport seems designed for inconvenience!

Edit: nothing in this LPT is about convincing you to check bags. I just want others to know they can save $40+ by a reasonable ask for their own convenience when they may be forced to check the bag at the gate anyway.

Caveat: With some airlines - at some locations - not Frontier or Ryanair and not in Canada since they’re nice and offer it for free apparently.
