I was doing a monthly trip to the recyclers and my car was loaded with bags of glass, plastic, and cans. It’s a 40-minute drive from our rural property to town and the recycle place. So I get on the highway and then start to notice a smell. Yeah, must not have totally rinsed out one of those gross cat food cans or something. Continue down the road, listen to the news, chew some gum, smell the smell, take a drink of water, plan all the errands I need to run on my once-a-week trip to town.
After unloading the recyclables and heading to my next stop, I realize something still smells in my car. Driving along I take another sip of water but notice a shadow of some sort in the bottle (gray-tinted Nalgene). Huh? I hold it up to the light and FML it’s a dead mouse. Must have been in there a couple days at least because it looked soft and blobby.
OMG OMG I’m in the middle of three lanes of traffic not knowing whether to throw up or crash. I stop at the nearest pharmacy, run in (throwing the water bottle in the trash) and buy some hydrogen peroxide. In front of the store I take a swig and rinse out my mouth, spit in the trash. Take a few more swigs/spits of peroxide then call Poison Control to learn just how soon I’m gonna die. (They said I’d probably be ok but had never heard that one before.)
Turns out that at home the mouse got into the garage, climbed up and into the car through a cracked window, then climbed into the bottle because I left the lid off. Like, really? What are the chances?
I always screw the tops on now.
TL;DR: a mouse crawled into the water bottle in my car and died. A couple days later I drank out of the bottle while driving, not knowing there was a decomposing mouse in the water.
