So, this is officially my biggest mess-up to date. I’m (26F), just gave birth two weeks ago via C-section. I was on the phone with my cousin (also 26F), who’s practically my sister—we’re super close, and I love her to bits.
Anyway, we were speed-talking through everything, and she was horrified at the whole “they opened my body” part. So, I tried to lighten things up and went, “Guess who was right next to my bed? A celebrity!” I mentioned the name, and she recognized her right away. She had the same surgery as me, so I said, “Poor thing doesn’t even have a mom!”
As soon as those words left my mouth, I knew I’d messed up. My cousin got quiet, and I realized my blunder—she’s, well, also without a mom. Cue internal screaming. Desperate to make it better, I tried to fix it by adding, “She doesn’t have sisters either!” Then it hit me like a truck—my cousin doesn’t have sisters either. Just… ouch.
So, there I was, scrambling, trying to make her laugh. I started telling her all the awkward things about my “hospital neighbor,” like her nonstop farts and every other detail, until finally, finally, my cousin cracked a smile.
Don’t worry guys we are so awkward all the time and she actually laughed on me so hard while I try to fix it :(
TL;DR
accidentally reminded my orphaned cousin of her family situation by joking about a celebrity’s lack of family, then scrambled to fix it with funny hospital stories until my cousin laughed.
