Mission Control sends you down to a cave filled with lootbugs that have eaten way more loot than the average bug. They’ll also give you a few automated drones to carry the bugs when you tag them (pressing E on them when close enough— sorry, no petting), and an enormous glass container (or something similar) to store them in.

However, these lootbugs have evolved: they’re armored (making them impossible to kill and fail the mission by killing too many), faster than normal lootbugs (about the speed of a glyphid grunt), and run from dwarves when you get too close, so you have to hunt them down.

Once you tag an evolved lootbug, the tag stays on until a drone manages to catch it, and it’s impossible for the bugs to escape the drones once tagged. The drones have very limited energy, though — they can only carry over a few bugs before needing to be refueled. They’ll dock at the glass container when that happens, and you can refuel them quickly by grabbing the oil canister there and interacting with the drones. R&D, in their infinite wisdom, didn’t think to automate the refueling process.
