I see comments to the effect of “I don’t want to waste my money getting an assessment if I’m going to risk not getting a diagnosis.”

You’re not paying for a diagnosis (or you shouldn’t be anyway, there are places that will just tell you what you want to hear). You’re paying for an assessment. If they tell you you’re not autistic, you didn’t waste your money.

Now for the caveats: 1.) Yes, it’s possible to get misdiagnosed. Do your research and find the best clinic close to you that is up to date. Also, go for a full neuropsych eval if you can. 2.) Yes, you want it to be worth your money, especially if you’re dropping thousands on it. See #1. 3.) Yes, you can seek a second opinion if you have a bad experience.
