As the title states. I’m looking to switch to Linux because I don’t want to use Windows 11. I am currently running Windows 10 and honestly I could probably get away with using WINE for a lot of my specific use-cases (namely, using audio equipment on software, since most of the drivers and software are windows specific.) I’m looking for suggestions on what I should go with on my main PC. I have a thinkpad X230 running Void Linux from base (DWM) so I’m not against getting down and dirty with configs. I don’t have an issue with systemd, so compatibility it huge. I’m looking for a distro that won’t break itself when I’m just trying to play a game. Not necessarily a Linux noob so troubleshooting isn’t an issue but my time is limited nowadays. I’ve heard of Nobara and Garuda Linux but I figured I’d ask for people’s opinion. What would you guys recommend for a PC running a Ryzen 5700x3D and a 3080 and 32GB of RAM. I am not afraid of a commandline and enjoy coding in my free time as well, so I’m not necessarily ONLY asking for beginner friendly distro recommendations, just kinda what everyone has been using and why. Since Windows 10 is being dropped in October 2025 I figured now would be a good time to transition and experiment.
Some games I play are: CS2, Factorio, Satisfactory, Minecraft, Vintage Story, Starsector, Project Zomboid, Star Citizen, Stellaris, Elite Dangerous, Space Marine 2 and Darktide, Satisfactory, and occasionally I’ll play on my bass guitar using Rocksmith 2014
so any tips regarding these specific games would be greatly appreciated!
Additionally, I am also familiar with Proton. I have a Steamdeck and I am familiar though a little unsatisfied but it’s (mostly) immutable Linux OS. That said I am familiar with proton compatibility and issues with anticheat. So anyone’s experiences with any of these games are greatly welcome.
