Hi all!

I’m Armenian and have been living here for 2 years. And a 10% service charge drives me crazy.

Just out of curiosity, when did the madness start?

— today, 99% of restaurants and cafes charge this 10% service fee. — 3 years ago, it was the same as now. — 5 years ago, it was less spread (at least as I remember it)

— 7 years ago, even less or maybe even rare.

So, my question is, when did this 10% madness start? I’m not against it, but most of my relatives and friends from abroad think that 10% is a mandatory tip. But the restaurant workers said that it’s not tips.

Edit: Usually, I add 10% to their 10% service fee.
