Yesterday my good long-time workmate, now working elsewhere, came by my desk to ask a favor - please review a draft report.

Happy to I said and later on she emailed it to me. Today I finished and ready to send it back.

I started my reply email and then I saw something I thought was fun. I then wrote 'Hey I just typed the first 2 letters of yr name in the “To” field, and this happened …"

  • ( here I added a screenshot of her name in the name drop-down list, the next person below hers with the same two letters was - and this is fun - our Group Area General Manager.) FUN & Lolz.

I kept writing “So if anyone asks were you are in the business tell them you’re above the GM.”

Then I finished up my message.

Then I signed off “LOVE FROM [cute nickname]”

Then I sent the email with this in the subject line: "Love from [cute nickname] review of document ‘Discovery and Analysis Efficiency Gains’

Then I didnt check if the GM was included as a recipient. Which he was.

Which I then saw a couple hours later.

I sent a message recall request.

This came back - "The recall action can’t be performed right now but we’ll keep trying - please check back later’

I kept punching refresh until this back "The message was successfully recalled…’ YAAY!! … ‘but was read by the recipient".

Well that’s hardly a success then is it.

I hope now the GM thinks this was as fun a thing as I used to.

TL:DR: Sent a jokey email about a coworker ranking above the GM and signed off with “Love from [cute nickname]”— then sent it to the GM too.
