I was watching some Ralf KoF 98 gameplay and it was pretty crazy how much damage he would get out of stray hits out of his heavy buttons. And not in the sense of “Oh, I connected with my button, I better convert this out with some combo into a knockdown”. No, just a single hit, doesn’t cancel into anything, but it’s big, fast and mean and when it counter hits it takes off like a big chunk of the health bar and stops you in your tracks. And I don’t know, I don’t think hes top tier, but I believe hes pretty competitive in that game

It made me think of any character that works like that in modern fighting games. Is there any fighting game that rewards that kind of playstyle nowadays? I guess the closest thing in SF6 is Marisa, but because of Drive Rush every character works out of the first type of stray hit damage. Same thing with KoF where Ralf was ironically enough Top Tier in the first version of XV because those previous uncancelable stray hits could now become combos.

Are we forever doomed to live in the era where everything leads to combo which leads to a HKD.
