I have bipolar disorder and I have accommodations with my employer to work from home up to twice a month. This has not been working for me because I can’t really control when I go through depressive episodes and also it created a lot of stigma around the office as I am the only one that can work from home and my coworkers look down on me for it. I’m not on any performance plan and I check in with my manager every month to make sure I’m doing alright. He has never mentioned a need for me to improve, but I can tell he hates that he has to provide me with accommodations.

I gave my manager more accommodations to try and he never passed it along to HR. It sat with him for about a month. I had applied to another job within the company that was hybrid. It was a very good fit for me too. The interview went very well so I was completely shocked I got denied. The feedback was that I didn’t have enough experience…even though the role was entry level. I asked to elaborate and they didn’t give me a clear answer.

In the same week I was met with a mutual separation agreement effective immediately. It almost feels as though they don’t want to work on accommodations with me and would much rather have me leave.

I know reassignment is an accommodation option we had discussed, that’s why I applied to the other role. But it was never an official request approved by doctor. I was considering getting it in writing, sending to HR and see what happens. I highly doubt they’ll actually grant me this accommodation, but it at least buys me more time to find another job instead of being terminated before the holidays.
