So I have a tutoring gig I do on the side and honestly it saddens me how stressed some of these kids are.
They just can’t find a job to get on their feet and the through line in a lot of their stories is - “my parents are getting hella cheesed and want me to carry my own weight” etc etc
And they’ve tried explaining to their parents the state of the economy but they just don’t buy it and even get berated for it being called “lazy bums”, “making excuses” and other gaslight-y type things which weighs on their conscience and makes them feel defective in some way. This is especially strong in ethnic households but really it touches every group in my experience. I can tell this is impeding some of their learning as well through poor self image / low self esteem. And that’s just what they are willing to open up about, I can’t imagine what some of them deal with privately.
Nobody official is openly saying anything about it and the kids/young adults are suffering silently for it. Very unfortunate.
If you are one of these parents - F**K you from the bottom of my heart. It’s reasonable to make demands and see some proof of effort — sometimes kids are apprehensive/fearful but if your kid is doing their best with the hand they got - chill.the.eff.out.
