Here is a short, but sweet story of trying to do malicious compliance as a young 'un… and how it backfired on me.
So way way back in 5th grade (I’m old, so this would have been in the early 80s), our teacher was having a very bad day. Probably because we were a bunch of 5th graders and doing all kinds of things that annoyed the teacher, like talking to each other, running around the classroom, etc.
The bell for recess rang, but he kept us in for another 5 minutes as punishment, and told us to read a book. Some kids were still talking, and I was probably one of them. The teacher was pissed, and yelled at the class again, and said something to the effect of “Take out a book, and get your nose into it!” so I did exactly that, and opened up my book, and put my nose inside. Now the teacher was extremely pissed, walked over to me, and forced my face into my book, and told me that I had to keep it there for the rest of the time-out.
I will still comply maliciously from time to time, but always careful about it since then…
