First Four Out
Season Breakdown and 1899 All-Americans
Okay we college football continues to expand south and west, the Ivy League continues to dominate, yeah, yeah, yeah. Let us talk about the team this year is known for. The legendary Sewanee Iron Men. So what is the story of this team? Well Sewanee started their team in 1891, and prior to this they only had two winning seasons, one of which they have the claim I have only seen with this college team being a “Tennessee state champion.” By what authority they make this claim I am still unsure (If any Sewanee alumni know why this claim is made please explain in the comments I would love to know what is happening with this.) The other season was their first undefeated season where they went 4-0 vs Nashville, Texas, a New Orleans football club, and Vanderbilt. However, the task their 1899 season would ask of them would be even greater.
Their schedule would have 13 games scheduled within 43 days, including a six day span where they would play five opponents away from Hardee Field (now named McGee Field at Harris Stadium). The only time they would have a break longer than a week would be when University of Nashville would cancel their game the week before. Even more impressive this team would win every single one of their games with the closest being their season finale vs North Carolina where they would win 5-0. This schedule was the brainchild of the student manager Luke Lea (who would later become a US senator and attempt to have an unauthorized operation to kidnap Kaiser Wilhelm II after the end of World War I, as well as be convicted on multiple counts of bank fraud.) His daughter in an interview with ESPN on College Gameday said that at the time student managers not only had a say in hiring a coach, but also in making the schedule. How he managed to convince these schools to allow this as well as figure out the logistics of this is still something I can not find an answer on.
Their run would be so dominant that The Times-Democrat out of New Orleans would declare them as champion after that game. So why hasn’t any selector given them a championship bid? Well this is something that will be a constant debate in whether teams from the South would be as good as the East Coast schools at the time (or even the Midwest schools later on). As you can see, the people who have put in more work to rank these teams before still put Sewanee as a #20 seed despite their incredible run. Do I agree? Well I am not really sure, but it there would be a bias towards southern teams until the 1920s when the first southern team wins a Rose Bowl. But that is far too ahead of the story we’re telling now. What should be important is that despite this legendary run, there is a clear bias towards southern teams at this time. Huh, I wonder if that bias still exists?
There is another team that we have seen but a character has been introduced that you may have heard of, as the Carlisle Indian Industrial School hired a new head coach and has improved their season from 6-4 to 9-2, losing only to the two teams selected as National Champions. Now we’ve seen him in other playoff teams, including last year’s Cornell and would go back to coach there in a for a few years before coming back, but Pop Warner would spend more time in Carlisle than any other school, even though he’ll have more success at another school a decade later, he is, in some ways, more remembered for his time in Carlisle than any other school.
