Does anyone remember this brief, but glorious time in music trading? I was reminiscing about the good old days of music swapping and got especially nostalgic for the FTP phase.
To me anyway, this was post mailing burned CDrs and pre bit torrent. People would put their digital music file collections online and give out FTP information. You needed to have the port number, and FTP info including a password.
The number of slots available to download was controlled and small, so you had to set up your FTP client to keep trying to get in, over and over. Everyone else was doing the same thing, once someone would disconnect the first FTP client that attempted with the right information connected. Then you could access files and download away, it was glorious.
There are all kinds of other rules that weny along with this but hopefully you get the picture.
One of my favorite FTP servers back in the day was run by a group of self proclaimed "bearded" individuals who ran a huge library of music under the radar on their employer's network. It would go down all the time, but when it was up and running their connection was lightning fast.
Anyone else utilize this back in the day?
