Introduction

After starting 3-6 in 2023, finishing 9-8, and miraculously being a few plays away from the NFCC, the Green Bay Packers went into 2024 with high expectations. Last year was meant to be our rebuild year, and yet it ended up so much more, so fans were very excited to see what Jordan Love could do now that he’s had more time to refine his skills. Additionally, the Packers hired a new defensive coordinator from Boston College named Jeff Hafley. After suffering through Joe Barry for way too long, we were excited to see what Hafley had to offer (and so far, I like what he has to offer).

After an exciting free agency with some big name pick-ups and a draft that led to a lot of curiosity and potential, Packers fans were fully expecting this year to be better. In some respects, this year was better. We ended up with a better record, we had a better running game, and we saw better safety play. However, some attributes of the team regressed - such as our wide receiver group.

The big misfortune for the Green Bay Packers this season was our division. The Packers ended up 11-6, however, 5 of those losses were to divisional rivals. The Packers went 1-5 against other NFC North teams, and only ended up winning that 1 by a blocked field goal (thank you Karl Brooks). Despite this, an 11-6 record is nothing to balk at though, but it feels diluted by the fact that the Packers ended up 3rd in the division. Let it be known an 11-6 record would have been first in 3 divisions and second in 3 divisions.

2024 Offseason (Free Agency, Draft, Trades)

Notable Free Agency / Trade Gains

  • Xavier McKinney - previously a New York Giant, the Packers somehow, by the grace of God, acquired the best safety free agent. Xavier McKinney was signed to a four-year, $67 million contract and excited many Packers fans
  • Josh Jacobs - previously the star running back for the Las Vegas Raiders, and the rushing yards leader / 1st Team All Pro for the 2022 season. The Packers were able to sign Josh Jacobs to a 4 year, $48 million contract. For a brief moment, Packers fans thought we may have a tandem of Josh Jacobs and Aaron Jones - although those hopes were squashed when Aaron Jones was released within the next hour after Josh Jacobs signing
  • Andre Dillard - previously a tackle for the Tennessee Titans, the Packers got some further depth for the offensive line. Though there wasn’t much excitement around Dillard, he was still a noticeable name amongst the new players
  • Brayden Narveson - The second string kicker for the Tennessee Titans who was picked up shortly before the regular season after witnessing his preseason performances. Narveson’s pick up was encouraged and predicted by Packers fans, hoping he would fix our kicking woes (narrator: he did not)
  • Malik Willis - the only trade on here where the Packers sent the Titans a 7th round pick. The infamous Malik Willis who was, at one point, in many mock drafts as a top 5 pick in a very weak QB year. Malik Willis quickly fell by the wayside on the Tennessee Titans especially as they drafted Will Levis the year after drafting Malik Willis. This move had fans scratching their heads, although it would ultimately prove to be a good trade

Notable Free Agency Losses/Cuts

  • Aaron Jones - our star running back, drafted from UTEP in 2017 and working his way to the front of the franchise, and endeared to all of us was cut at the start of free agency due to high contract price. Aaron Jones ended up signing with the Minnesota Vikings instead, much to all of our chagrin
  • Darnell Savage - our former first round safety who had been the definition of hot and cold did not sign with us again (and we had not picked up his fifth year option either) and instead became a Jacksonville Jaguar
  • Jon Runyan Jr. - our starting left guard became a free agent and we moved on to bigger and better things, so he entered free agency and signed with the New York Giants
  • David Bakhtiari - I’m gonna be honest, I genuinely forgot this was the year we cut Bakh. Despite being one of the best left tackles for much of the 2010s, Bakh completely fell off the way side due to injuries that occurred at the end of the 2020 season. In the 2021, 2022, and 2023 seasons, he played a combined 13 games (and 11 of those were in the 2022 season) so it was time for us to finally let go of Bakh. Bakhtiari has yet to sign with a team, and it remains to be seen if he ever will
  • De’Vondre Campbell - the infamous player now who we got an All-Pro season out of in 2021, but was never able to replicate that success. Campbell was cut and then signed with the San Francisco 49ers. Eventually, he fell into hard times with the 49ers after refusing to play for them mid-game. Glad we got rid of that guy

Draft Picks

  • Jordan Morgan, OL - Round 1, Pick 25
  • Edgerrin Cooper, LB - Round 2, Pick 45
  • Javon Bullard, S - Round 2, Pick 58
  • MarShawn Lloyd, RB - Round 3, Pick 88
  • Ty’Ron Hopper, LB - Round 3, Pick 91
  • Evan Williams, S - Round 4, Pick 111
  • Jacob Monk, OL - Round 5, Pick 163
  • Kitan Oladapo, S - Round 5, Pick 169
  • Travis Glover, OL - Round 6, Pick 202
  • Michael Pratt, QB - Round 7, Pick 245
  • Kalen King, CB - Round 7, Pick 255

Draft Analysis

Going into the draft, a lot of Packers fans were pretty confident we needed secondary help. In fact, I remember a lot of Packers fans clamoring for future Super Bowl superstar Cooper DeJean as our pick in the first round. Suffice it to say, picking an offensive lineman Jordan Morgan was a pretty big surprise for me and for many at the time. However, the Packers followed it up nicely in the second round with picking the top LB of the draft in Edgerrin Cooper as well as getting some safety help with Javon Bullard. We filled out the rest of our draft with some more secondary help, some more offensive line (the Packers have a tendency to work well with late-round offensive line picks), and even a RB in MarShawn Lloyd as we were seeking for a solid #2 with Aaron Jones cut from the team and AJ Dillon’s time with the Packers likely coming to an end. A notable pick is grabbing Kalen King at the very end, a player who was seen as first-round potential the year before, but fell in many draft boards due to a disastrous 2023 CFB season for him

Week by Week

Week 1 - The first game of the season came with a lot of anticipation, due in no small part to it being the first Brazilian game in league history. Prior to the game, there were controversies over whether the color green would be permitted due to local team rivalries in Brazil (which is made even funnier by the fact that the league chose 2 green teams to play this game). This was also a Friday night game, making it doubly unique and officially the second game of the season. This game has become infamous amongst Packers fans (and I would assume Eagles fans too) due to the horrid field conditions.

The Packers started out this game decently with two field goals in the first quarter putting them up 6-0 on the Eagles in addition to the very first INT by Xavier McKinney. The second quarter was filled with a back and forth with the Eagles scoring a TD to put them up 7-6, and then the Packers scoring, then the Eagles scoring, then the Packers scoring, and finally the Eagles kicking a field goal for 19-17 score at the end of the first half with the Packers leading. The third quarter had the Eagles start with the ball and quickly scoring a TD to give them the lead off of a 67 yard pass from Jalen Hurts to AJ Brown. The Packers quickly responded with a Christian Watson TD, but then the Eagles came back with a Saquon Barkley TD.

As the Packers and Eagles entered the fourth quarter, it was 31-26 Eagles leading. The fourth quarter saw a Jaire Alexander INT giving the Packers a chance to win it, but the following drive led only to a field goal cutting the score down to 31-29. The Eagles then ate up the clock and kicked another FG putting the score at 34-29 with only 27 seconds left.

Still having a chance to win it, Jordan Love goes back out for the Packers, needing to score a TD, but unfortunately suffers a leg injury in the final secon…
