Recently, I’ve gotten the sense my parents are snooping around in my room while I’m out. There’s always stuff misplaced and turning up in odd places, so I’ve always asked my parents if they were going through my stuff and putting them back later. They always denied this and said that I must have misremembered.
I decided to trick them to get them to admit that they’re snooping. Specifically, if they found something bad in my room, they’d confront me about it. I have creatine powder that’s white and powdery, and so could pass for cocaine. I put some of it in small plastic baggies and stashed them around my room. Just as I thought, my parents ‘found’ them and started screaming at me when I got home.
I went to my room, brought out the container of creatine I had, and showed them it was the same powder. I then said that they had now admitted to lying about searching my room, and that they shouldn’t try to lie to and gaslight their child. They said that I’m TA for tricking them and ‘worrying’ them by thinking I do cocaine, but I think it’s justified as a way to get them to admit they were invading my privacy. Otherwise, they never would’ve.
AITA?
NTA, and I think you’ve got a future at the PEA: the Privacy Enforcement Agency.
