So last night I get paired in a 6 power pod. I am playing my [[Eriette of the Charmed Apple]] deck and guy across from me is playing [[King of the Oathbreakers]] and I just think shit, I am pretty worthless against that deck. Next to him, sits a guy that always pubstomps and this game his deck is no exception-- he pulls out [[Alela, Cunning Conqueror]]. Finally, the guy next to me sits down and pulls out his Stanley toolbox and looks at each of our commanders. After reading them he finally decides to play his [[Faldorn, Dread Wolf Herald]] deck.

So my question is: why do people do this?

Ultimately what he picked didn’t matter since the Alela player took instant control of that game and basically just dragged things out by making sure he didn’t lose and nobody else won. I admit I was pretty salty that game so I was a little more annoyed than usual, but I still just dealt with a commander that was completely opposite to my strategy. I don’t know, I see that as a fun problem to solve rather than trying to find the perfect commander to slot into a game. I couldn’t do a lot to the Oathbreaker player so I mainly tried to work on the other players, but even after the Alela player casts Cyclonic Rift for the third time in the game and followed it up with an extra turn for good measure I still smiled and took it (even though I really wanted to scoop on the inside after that).
