I want to challenge my players in a way that feels challenging but they are a group of 3. I’ve already read what the GMG and Nethys says I should do in relation to XP, rewards, and encounter building. Though my problem lies in party comp, the group has a ranged martial (gunslinger), a healer (alchemist chirurgeon), and a spell caster (oracle). There is a lack of someone who can just absorb blows and keep the rest of the party safe. Right now I’ve tried giving them ample cover and different latitudes to help them mitigate the squishiness issue. However, I want to run a monster that is going to be a challenge (severe 3) but I also don’t wanna TPK them and have them feel it’s unfair. I know I should give them room to run away and such, but I’m asking since I feel this is gonna be an issue that extends past this one encounter.

I wanna avoid using DMPC’s but I’m ready to do so if that’s what’s best, but I’d rather find a way for them to get through this campaign without feeling like they have training wheels.
