I have a group of 4 friends and we all play mtg. A couple of years ago we started playing edh. At the beggining we were completely clueless about the format and just builded decks with whatever legends and cards we had around (we share a collection of about 11k cards, mostly draft chaff). Our first decks were fairly bellow precon level. We are talking low power, 20 turns games.
With time, we builded different decks and got a hang on the format and, most importantly, what type of decks each of us likes. As a result, three of us started building more tuned decks and acquiring the pieces needed. The fourth one never spends money on cards, so he builded a more tuned deck but with what we have around.
Unfortunately the disparity between us is clear. It’s not like he never wins, but his win rate is around one in ten games or less, and only because we usually don’t target his stuff. He wins only the occasional very long attrition game (his only deck is aristocrats). It doesn’t feel right that the 3 of us are battling it out and he’s not, really. Sometimes he gets frustrated and wants to quit midgame when he’s really far behind (although he ultimately doesn’t).
I thought about proxies as a solution, but our group doesn’t like it (including him). It’s also clear that he won’t spend money on cards. So I’m looking for other options to level the playing field. I think that now that we know the format more, it would be hard to build janky clunky decks on purpose, but maybe by imposing a restriction like a $20 budget, or no ramp, or something like that. Idk, I’m open to ideas.
PS: Using our collection you could make a good simic deck, but he really likes aristocrats.
