Hi,
I’m looking to upgrade from my current GPU, which is a GTX 1080. I’m looking to get a GPU which supports hardware AV1 encoding. For Nvidia it would be the RTX 4000 series, I’m eyeing the RTX 4070. I see on AMD’s side it would be the RX 7000 series. Intel ARC at this point isn’t performing well enough in games for me to consider.
I’ve never used an AMD GPU on Linux, so I have a few questions. I’ve read in the past here that the open-source graphics drivers included in the kernel are the best performing for games, and advice against installing the AMD Pro drivers. Is this correct? How plug and play is the gaming experience these days?
Is AMD AMF (which I assume is required from AV1 encoding) only supported on the Pro driver, or can I just install the amf-amdgpu-pro AUR package and it’ll work with the non-Pro kernel driver?
Does anyone using an AMD GPU have experience using gpu-screen-recorder with hardware encoding (h265)? Any particular observations, issues, etc.?
And any other opinions, perhaps comparing Nvenc to AMF?
