Hi Boise,

We’re nearing two weeks since I posted a message on here asking if anyone might be interested in starting up a group (primarily geared for people in their 20s/30s) that would regularly meet for beers, board games, and banter at breweries in the Boise area. Many of you responded ‘yes’ to that proposal, and thus Boise Brews & Board Games is now a living, breathing thing. We’ve got the dice, we’ve got the games, and we’re thirsty as hell for another round of pints.

For now, we’ve decided to start a Discord group to coordinate game nights, which you can join by clicking here: https://discord.gg/CA2qZf54. If you’re new to Discord (like I was only 8 days ago), it’s just a free-to-use instant messaging platform that’s far more conducive to planning events than I have found Reddit to be, personally.

A few quick items:

  • This group is brand, spankin’ new. As such, we’re still trying to figure out scheduling and what days work best for meetups. Please be patient as we work through the kinks.
  • Our meeting locations may change from week to week until we figure out a permanent spot/time. Always check the Discord for the latest updates.
  • If you feel strongly about using the channel to organize a game night yourself, you may do so! Please use your best judgement in communicating the details (what/when/where) and do not spam the channel. Keep comms to a minimum.
  • If you have a game of your own that you’d like to play/teach others, please bring it and spread the wealth.
  • Be kind. This is a group for folks that you’ll want to see again, not for folks you don’t. So when you enter, be on your best behavior. Laugh, joke, be merry and jive.

If anyone has issues signing into the Discord, just message me personally or leave a comment below and I’ll get back to you.

I’ll paste my original post below, in case anyone missed it and wants to check out the Origin Story of the greatest group ever made. (Okay, maybe one day we’ll hold that title).

Hey all,

[TL;DR – I’m a guy in my early 30s, hoping to meet other guys and gals in their 20s/30s over good games and even better beer. I’m gauging interest to see if any others might want to meet up at a local brewery for a game night. Board gaming is a hobby of mine, but it’s not my identity or sole hobby (see: mountain biking, running, tomfoolery). I like winning (who doesn’t?), but to me the fun is more about chatting with others over a good pint. If that describes you, leave a comment below and we’ll meet up.]

I know a few board game groups already meet on the weekly, but I noticed these tend to be held at board game shops or some frozen yogurt shop. There’s nothing wrong with that, but I like BEER with my board games. I probably like beer even more than the board games. If you gave me a Ballast Point Sculpin IPA and invited me to a game of 7 Wonders, we would probably be instant buddies.

Furthermore – and I’m trying to be careful how I word this – I’ve noticed that board game shops tend to attract a certain type of individual: lifelong enthusiasts who live and breathe board games and build most of their identity around board games (and are very passionate to critique your play or point out why you’re incorrect). This isn’t always the case, of course (and I realize I shouldn’t generalize an entire group of people based on a few very passionate, questionably hygienic individuals), but it’s not really the vibe I’m looking for when I get a group together. My vibe is beer + board games + casual banter with fun people = excellence.

If that sounds like something you might be interested in, drop me a comment below or DM me and we’ll get something together.

But for those that are still on the fence about this, just know that I’m a pretty patient dude and more than happy to teach (and re-teach) any of the games that I bring along. I also invite others who join me to bring any game they want to play, provided it can be taught in about 10 minutes or less. (Let’s leave Twilight Imperium at home for now).

As for a location, I’m thinking something in downtown or close proximity to it. I’m open to suggestions. A few candidates: Barbarian, Boise Brewing, Payette, Woodland Empire, White Dog, 10 Barrell.

A little about me: I’m in my early 30s, male, and just recently moved to Boise (though not from California, lol). While I do enjoy board games, I’m much more interested in meeting new people (preferably in my age range) who have a versatile set of interests and hobbies. For example, I also enjoy mountain biking, running, weightlifting, snowboarding, reading sci-fi/fantasy stories, and playing video games, to name a few. And I like beer. (Oh, and whiskey, as you can probably tell from my Reddit name).
