A lot of tutorials just talk about renting a VPS, or setting up a separate box at home, but my needs are as simple as they can be.

Today, I port-forward Minecraft’s port on my router and send my WAN IP to my friends. Whenever we want to play, I just spin up the server, I don’t need it up 24/7.

I understand it poses a security risk, so without over-complicating things, how do I secure my setup?

I have a basic plan in mind:

  1. buy domain
  2. Use domain’s DDNS option and point it to my WAN IP
  3. Setup a reverse-proxy service on my PC
  4. port forward 80/443 on my router

I’m wondering if this would work, since Minecraft is not using HTTP so the reverse-proxy idea might not suit my needs?

All I want is an on-deman option to run my server, play with friends, close it when I’m done :)
