My wife is the sweetest, kindest, pet-loving-est person in the world. But we live out here in the sticks where people constantly dump unwanted pets, and we’re now stuck in a bad situation and I could use some advice.

Halloween night we found a stray pit-mix at the gas station. She was doing a lot of “help me” body language so my wife scooped her up and brought her home. Typically farm dogs or anything that’s been on its own for a while is going to be stinky and covered in fleas and ticks, but she was clean and very docile and polite and wearing a very thick and very tight spiked collar with a couple pieces of odd hardware hanging off. I suspect she had been on a chain. Put her in the back seat and brought her home.

Of course we did all the obligatory websites and social media posts. Nextdoor, all the local FB groups, Craigslist, local rescues etc., but nobody is claiming her. Got scanned, no chip (of course). Called all the local shelters and they’re all full (of course). The closest shelter gave us a vague description of a waitlist, but then wouldn’t elaborate or give us a ballpark timeline at all.

So here’s the problem. We’ve been keeping her in the mud room and she’s starting to tear things up. Digging in the corner and ripped up my plywood subfloor trying to escape. Scratched the shit outta my antique mahogany door. Then my wife took her outside for a walk and she slipped out of the new collar and took off after the barn cat in a murderous rage. Fur was shed, but fortunately the old barn kitty was smart enough to escape with her life (but now scowls at us with a palpable distrust). So now I know why she had a super tight collar… We’ve already got two indoor dogs that she keeps trying to fight through the door, two indoor cats that are terrified, and 29 chickens and ducks that are completely oblivious to the violent thug waiting for a chance to escape the mud room and go on a rampage.

So how do y’all handle this? It seems like I’ve got two options: Humanely put her down, or dump her again and make her somebody else’s problem. But either way, I need this dog out of my life ASAP. She’s wrecking the peace and harmony around the farm and I’m out of patience.

Edit: central Texas. Lockhart-ish if that helps.

Edit #2: I will happily drive two hours in any direction tonight to deliver this dog to someone who will take her. That includes everyone in the comments telling me I should just “train her”.
