Hi everyone,

To cut a long story short…a good friend of mine was defrauded online by a guy he met on Grindr while interstate in Australia. They then met at the guy’s five-star hotel. A few days later my friend realised that there were some fraudulent transactions on his bank account adding up to a couple of thousand dollars. After speaking with a friend he realised that the guy he met on Grindr had likely accessed his credit card details while he was in the shower.

The police investigated for a while but for various reasons they had to close the case. These reasons included allegations the bank would not cooperate with the police (which the bank denies), difficulties establishing the fraudsters identity and the fact he lives interstate.

It should be noted the bank refunded my friend his money without any issues within a week. However, my friend cares more about others than simply having got his money back. He has good reason to believe the suspect is continuing to target other members of the gay, bisexual and wider queer community.

My friend has since found another likely victim and believes he has established the identity of the fraudster. He is building a case to present to the police. Has anyone here on Reddit in Australia been defrauded by someone they met in person after they were contacted on an app like Grindr?
