Narsimha Rao and Manmohan Singh remain some of the best leaders of independent India. However, watch any interview of Rahul Gandhi, and you’ll realize that this is not the Congress party of Manmohan Singh or Narasimha Rao. In fact, the Congress party today seems deeply embarrassed of the liberalisation policies of 1991, which unleashed Indias growth.

This Congress party is instead built on the same ideals of the disastrous Indira Gandhi second term. Prioritizing short term relief over long term investments, reintroducing fiscally disastrous schemes like unfunded pensions (OPS, which was scrapped by MMS in UPA 1), wanting reservation in private sector, increasing reservation over 50%, all of them are populist measures which drive away business and result in bankrupt states, and have a hugely negative impact on the growth of the country.

The world is looking for a China alternative, and this is perhaps the most opportune moment in the history of independent India. To grow, we need to adopt policies present in successful and growing states such as Telangana, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, which rank near the top of GSDP growth. Instead, there is a race to the bottom, with both AAP and Congress mainly, and with the BJP jumping in some states like Madhya Pradesh, wanting to emulate policies of economically stagnant or near default states like West Bengal, Punjab, Himachal and Kerela.

Manmohan Singh remains India’s greatest economist. Indira Gandhi’s second term was a catastrophe for India. So why on earth is Congress rejecting the very policies that made them successful?
