Today, after enjoying my extra hour of daylight savings time sleep, I decided to make myself some late-morning chai. This was my second time using a new brand, which comes in a bulk bag instead of being pre-portioned. I remembered from the other day, when I made it the first time, thinking the directions were dumb: they call for 3 teaspoons of tea leaves per cup of water. I bake a lot, and I had wondered why they didn’t just call it a tablespoon, because it’s the same amount. Anyway, my thermos fits 3 cups, and the tea gets equal parts milk and water, so I used 1.5 cups of water. When I made it that day, I used a generous tablespoon of tea leaves to equal a bit less than 4.5 teaspoons. Life was good.

Well, my dumb self today must have not had my brain on, because I used about 4.5 TABLESPOONS of tea leaves to make my chai. And I only realized my fu like 12 hours later, because I’ve been lying in bed for 3 hours, unable to fall asleep and wondering why my resting heart rate feels so high. I don’t normally drink much caffeine… just a chai or Coke once a week or so because they’re delicious. But apparently the maximum recommended caffeine dose in a day in a day is 400mg, and I probably downed about 450mg in that one drink. I kept thinking my heart was racing today but chalked it up to not enough exercise recently.

The good news is I didn’t die. The bad news is my alarm to get up for work goes off in 3.5 hours, and I’m still completely awake. And since the half-life of caffeine apparently ranges from 2-12 hours depending on the individual and situation (and it seems I’m on the slow-metabolizing end), it will be really fun to find out when and how hard I’ll crash. So in the meantime, I’m telling you all about it and accepting thoughts/prayers/well-deserved insults, because what in the actual heck was I thinking?

TL;DR: As someone who rarely drinks caffeine, accidentally made my tea triple strength and over the limit of safe caffeine consumption this morning. Many hours later, I’m still wide awake, can’t do anything about it, and am screwed for tomorrow.
