I just finished Tito Santana’s autobiography Don’t Call Me Chico (which was surprisingly good). Santana claims the WWF was considering him for a run with the WWF Championship right before Bret Hart won it (Santana claims Hart was the other choice). I know the WWF was trying to distance itself from the steroid stink at this time. It got me thinking about other wrestlers who were supposedly in line for the belt:

Jimmy Snuka: Bob Backlund claims in his memoir that Vince Sr. considered the Superfly but Snuka’s “personal demons” made him pass.

Tony Garea: I think the book WWE Legends has Garea stating he was in line. I find this hard to believe.

Kerry Von Erich: This is more like an urban legend as I’ve heard it mentioned Vince was considering Kerry but opted for Hogan. The rumors usually point to Vince’s promotion of World Class on WWF TV before Hogan came in.

Ted DiBiase: This is from the stories of Honky Tonk Man passing on dropping the I-C title to Savage and Savage winning the WWF Championship.

Are there any others you’ve heard of? Also, how credible do you find the five above?
