Sorry folks, nothing kinky.

My youngest is at kindi and his teacher just sent us about 8 videos of him pretending to fish. Our fav family TV show is Gone Fishing (coming to TVNZ, highly recommed) and he’s developed this wee obsession.

Now, time to dust off the ol rods and take him out for his first shot at it, you might think. But here’s the thing: I’m from a small industrial town in Britain where the only things you catch in the water are diseases. I netted a stickleback once in a pond near my Aunties and it honestly looked relieved to be out of there.

Getting to the point, I’m clueless, and I have no old poppa who can point out where I’m getting ripped off in the shop, where you’d start fishing as a fully beginner adult and what the heck you’d do with a keen 3yr old to keep him safe while teaching him the joys of standing near the water without dying in it.

Is there a fisherperson out there who can point me towards a beginner space/recommend a couple of easy starter set ups and somewhere Aucklandish to get started?

Tried the beginner fishing reddit and it’s all Americans talking at a technical level that I may reach after a decade or so.
