I have a handful of paid games on Steam that I want to make non-steam dependent. So that if I lose steam or whatever, I still have my games. Is there a proven / trusted method to accomplish this?

Not trying to be glib… I have never heard of a way to make your Steam games straight up no longer dependent on Steam other than pirating them separately. But games you buy on GOG do allow you to download the installers to save on a hard drive. Of course, many games aren’t sold on GOG.
