I figured Buckets users and especially u/iffycan would appreciate this. I was listening to a podcast interview with an author of a book about managing finances as a family. The authors said they have a real issue with the term “Net Worth” because it sounds like the amount of money you have is your worth.
They proposed just calling the amount of money you have “AUM” as in Assets Under Management like brokerage firms (investment companies) would.
The thinking here - we’re just temporarily managing whatever resources we have. If you think about it for a second, no matter what your religious beliefs are, this is true. Either as a Christian you believe God owns it all anyway, or if you’re an atheist once you pass away your heirs will get everything you owned while alive.
The book is “Simple Money, Rich Life” and it’s coming at it from a Christian world view. I haven’t read the book yet, but from hearing the interview it’s definitely going to be the next personal finance book I read.
