Round two of emulation tips that helped me get my setup working and looking nice.

Fix Dreamcast textures in Jet Set Radio and others

Really wanted to play Jet Set Radio in RetroArch but kept getting flickering textures. Similar issues in Ecco the Dolphin and Zombie Revenge. This is fixed by turning on “Native Depth Interpolation” in video settings.

L3+R3 (RetroArch Menu) -> Quick Menu -> Core Options -> Video -> Native Depth Interpolation (press up, it’s at the very bottom)

And if you want to save the configuration for next time,

Quick Menu -> Core Options -> Manage Core Options -> Save Game Options (for that specific game) or Save Content Directory Options (for that entire system/core)

Sega bios and cores

Sega Saturn, Sega CD and Dreamcast all require bios and gave me issues.

Sega Saturn in RetroArch has 4 different cores: Beetle-Saturn (Emudeck default), Kronos, Yabasanshiro and Yabause. Two reasons this matters. One, Beetle uses different bios files than the other three. And two, it gives you more options if a Saturn game isn’t running well.

If you’re using Emulation Station and want to change which emulator or core a specific game is using: Highlight a game -> Select -> Edit This Game’s Metadata -> Alt Emulator (at the bottom, press R2 to page-end)

And if you’d like to change what the default emulator is for a system: Start -> Other Settings -> Alt Emulators

For Sega CD, the bios issue I ran into was the naming convention.

The bios files I had were misnamed as ‘bios_CD_u’ instead of ‘bios_CD_U’. Took me forever to realize that it was capitalized wrong.

And for Dreamcast as set up by Emudeck, you have to create a folder in Emulation/bios called ‘dc’ and put ‘dc_boot.bin’ in there. It’s the only system that you manually make a bios sub folder for. All the rest go directly into the bios folder.

PS1 bindings

For some reason the quit hotkey of Start + Select wasn’t working so I had to manually fix that. To fix hotkey bindings: Start + L3 (Menu) -> Settings -> tab over with R1 to the Hotkey settings.

The one I changed was “Power Off System”. You just click it and then click your binding, in this case Start + Select. And lastly, go back to the first tab in settings called Interface Options and uncheck “Confirm Power Off” if you don’t want the prompt to save your state whenever you exit.

Also had issues where only the d-pad would work. Going to the controller tab in settings and changing “Controller Type” to analogue instead of digital allows you to use the analogue sticks.

3DS performance

This one may seem obvious to some but the plug-in Powertools helps out a lot with 3DS performance. The Emudeck wiki explains how to download and optimize Powertools. Turn off SMT, set GPU clock speed to 1200. Occasionally, I’ll have to re-open Powertools to have the settings register, but it has increased performance in a lot of games.

Hope these are helpful to some people!
