One thing I love about Perth is the birdlife. When I was waiting for the bus on my first day of school in Australia (I was year 10) I saw my first 28 and excitedly alerted everyone else at the bus stop about the Real parrots! Right across the road!! I remember them all silently blinking at me in response. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bird anywhere in the world I’d rate below 10/10 but sometimes I think I could never live anywhere else because I would miss West Aussie birds too much. I was thinking the other day I’m not even sure I could handle living in an apartment above the point where birds usually fly.

I can never decide whether I prefer magpies or red tail black cockatoos. The former are playful and social in a way that highlights their individual personalities. What I love about the latter is their solid don’t-give-a-fuck-edness, like how they will languidly tear a tree to shreds and make eye contact with you while they do it. I wish I were more like a red tailed black cockatoo.

So- native or invasive, parrot, corvid, or etc., which birds keep your spirits buoyed?

Or maybe you have one specific local bird you really like. I’d need to hear about that for sure.
