This bid has been ‘very advanced’ since last June, but it seems that this may be yet another nail in the coffin of Canberra entering in 2024/25.

The question of Canberra United is now the only thing that needs to be resolved. Conroy said that APL will not underwrite teams anymore, but if CU goes under then APL will end up killing two teams. If it comes to the point that APL needs to kick some cash in to keep CU afloat then that would definitely be in APL’s interest. If CU goes under, even if the expansion doesn’t use the CU name, people will just remember it as the group that killed CU and they will lose any community goodwill before the first ball is kicked.
