I’ve had a Dex-capable phone for years but never really gave it much thought - “why would I use this?” was my general impression. Well, just got blown away by what it can really do - I’ve got an outdoor event tonight that I’m running a few movies at, and I didn’t want to drag the laptop over for it, so I thought I’d see if Plex (already on the phone) would do OK via a USB-C-to-HDMI dongle on the phone (yes, works great) - but it’s a lot of movies, what about power? Didn’t want to drag over a wireless charging puck … so I dug out a Lention USB-C dock that has HDMI and USB PD, plugged that in and now I’ve got my movie running, and the phone is charging nicely. But wait - can I make my mouse & keyboard work? Yep, a Logitech wireless dongle in that dock works great, typing this right now using my desk keyboard and mouse. Reads and writes USB keys and MicroSD cards in the dock fine too. And the phone remains usable (if unwield on the dock, a USB-C extension cable helped a log) on its own display while using Dex, so I can still use it tonight while movies are playing if I need to.
It’s really close to a desktop experience - and with the dock it makes everything really portable, a lot of cases now where I can just leave my laptop behind entirely. I can’t believe I didn’t figure this out sooner - have missed out on a lot of opportunity by not testing this out years ago when I got the phone! :-)
