I am considering buying a Steam Deck, My primary use would be to play GamePass games locally installed (not streamed) and therefore I would need to run Windows. My intention would be to buy the 64GB model, wipe it and install windows on the eMMC/SSD, and install games onto an SD Card I already own. Some time in the future (when finances allow), I would swap it out with 1 or 2 TB SSD running either windows alone or dual booting with Steam OS.
I have the technical skills and comfort to install and configure windows (or dual boot or whatever).
Is this a good idea? Are there any “gotchas” I should know about for taking this approach? Will games run reasonably well off of SD-Card?
I have heard about people installing a live version of windows directly onto an SD card and leave SteamOS on the SSD, but this sounds like a terrible idea if the windows instal is used for anything remotely serious.
Advice and perspectives are appreciated.
