LPT: Every time you check into a vacation rental, locate and test the smoke detectors. Find the fire extinguishers and check the expiration dates. When assigning bedrooms to children, consider the room’s fire escape options and teach them. It’s a 30 minute time investment at check-in and it could save your family’s lives.

I checked into a cabin this week and found 3 out of 3 smoke detectors had dead batteries. The house was also missing detectors from an entire floor (with three bedrooms), the living room with fireplace, and the utility room the dryer. The fire extinguisher was last serviced in 1987. So it was only 27 years out of date. Called the owner and got them fixed immediately.
