Some context before I begin; I’m from south central Ontario, Canada.

This happened within the past hour. I was headed home from work at around 11:40pm, after my shift. I’ve been working at my job for about a year and have worked all three shifts at one point. Safe to say I’m familiar with my route at all times of day/night.

As I was driving down a dark secondary highway, no street lights and maybe a car every 10 minutes, I was coming up to a field on my left. Typically, I watch both sides of the road for any critters cuz I’d hate to accidentally run one over. I noticed on my left side what appeared to be a deer. My eyes darted to the left, then back to the road to make sure none were ahead. I had enough time to look again, but when I did, something just seemed off. The deer-like creature was bigger than a deer, but nothing like a cow or a horse. It was inside the field on the other side of the fence, though I’ve never seen any livestock in that field anyway. The more I looked, the weirder it got. It was on all fours with the neck bent down to the ground as if it were grazing. It wasn’t moving at all. Then I noticed the eyes - reflective of green and almost as if they were in the center front of the face and much too close together. I didn’t have any high beams on and the thought didn’t occur to me til after, but I couldn’t see any ears or antlers either.

By this point I had driven past and couldn’t observe any further. I was thinking back in my memory to the deer. My stomach felt like a knot and I felt a sense of dread. I can’t explain it. (I’m not an easily spooked person and I fall asleep to true crime on the regular, so the feeling was quite shocking). I don’t quite know when the thoughts hit me, but I began thinking of the worst possible scenarios I could encounter on my remaining drive. Trying to think of what my closest landmarks were just in case. I didn’t even realize I was doing this.

The dread followed me through the rest of my drive. I still can’t shake the feeling. I told my Mom - she’s staying with me for a bit - about it when I got home, and my whole body felt chilled. Just all goosebumps and creepies up my body to my neck.

The whole experience was really unsettling.

Thoughts? Maybe a bedtime story?
