I’m a South Asian man with an Arabic name, living in the USA. People in general struggle to understand my name and pronounce it right. Majority of my formal introductions is spent on repeating my name hopelessly, and spelling it out.

For situations involving where I need to be introduced to people I’ll likely never see again (service workers, wait staff, etc), I just say “Hi, I’m Adam Smith” My white husband has a very common white name. He’s fine with me using his name.

We needed to resolve a plumbing issue. I introduced myself as Adam Smith. He looked at me up and down, and said, “You don’t look like an Adam Smith.” He got very uncomfortable and started checking his phone. I assured him he was fine and safe, and was at the right house.

He got the job done and left real quick.

I’m a brown guy with a brown name, and introduced myself with a very common white man’s name to a plumber and made him very nervous.
