The best thing that could happen to Sync users and Lemmy as their new platform alike, would be an as seamless transition as possible:

An update to the app at the end of the month, a quick explanation “Hey, you might have heard that Reddit has locked us out from their API, this App now supports Lemmy instead” and, ideally: “Sync will help you sign up for and/or migrate your existing subscriptions to Lemmy as much as possible”.

Any additional friction, like:

  • having to re-download a different app
  • having to re-do all settings and customization
  • having to resubscribe to all personal interests
  • additional pay-gates
  • any day of down-time between Sync for Reddit’s demise and Sync for Lemmy’s launch

would diminish the Sync user base.

I fully realize that this is a massive ask, and that some of it wouldn’t necessarily be in /u/ljdawson’s best interest. Maybe it’s sufficient to seamlessly migrate the free user (monetization wouldn’t change for them anyway), while Pro users can be trusted to rebuy a new Pro app (maybe with a settings import or migration option)?
