I don’t live in the US but I’m a keen observer of McMansions (we had our own version in Ireland during the pre-financial crash boom years) and the one thing which has always confounded me about them more than anything else are the doors.

I don’t know how many I’ve seen which fall into one of three categories:

  1. Where’s the front door? - when you just can’t seem to locate where the front door is.

  2. Too many doors - when there seems to be more than one front door.

  3. Ceremonial front doors - where there’s a big showy front door, double height, pillars and columns, fan flights, the works, but it’s stranded in the middle of the front (usually but not always) elevation away from realistic walkways or paths.

The other which confuses me is the propensity to install tiny Jack and Jill bathrooms in houses with massive amounts of floor space where there’s absolutely no need to save space. But it’s the doors which get me most.
