My previous post got stealth removed (not the fault of the mods)! So reposting as text:

Just posting a follow up to Thursday’s post, where I highlighted that most school absence days are justified (most often due to sickness), and we speculated on whether Seymour literally meant “absence days”, or if he was maybe meaning only “unjustified absences”, or specifically “unjustified absence - truant” (since just “unjustified absences” could include things that aren’t deliberate truancy but aren’t in school policy, eg staying home for extended time after a funeral)

A STAR attendance system template has now been released which I think confirms yes, he was being literal - it’s absence days, regardless of justification.

The document shows, for term 2 2024:

  • 53% of students in green zone, “good”: less than 5 days absence
  • 26% of students in yellow zone, “worrying”: up to 10 days absence
  • 11% of students in orange zone, “concerning”: up to 15 days absence
  • 10% of students in red zone, “serious concern”: 15 or more days absence

I definitely recommend downloading the document [PDF warning] to read about the response at each colour that parents, schools, and the Ministry of Education will undertake.

That’s all for now ✌️
