Like most in this sub, I love my Steam Deck (OLED) and am always looking for games that are a good experience on the form factor and screen. However in most “best games” threads I see the same games recommended over and over, and they’re mostly games I could find by checking the Steam Deck Most Played list anyway. I wanted to share for fun some games that I don’t usually see in those threads that I highly recommend, and of course get some recs from the community too! Note I basically always use the deck handheld and not docked.

Honorable Mention

Ok, before we get to games I don’t usually see recommended, there are a few games that ARE frequently recommended that I’d like to highlight because they are THAT good.

DRG Survivor

Takes Vampire Survivors and makes it it’s own in a great way. I feel like a big downfall of Vampire Survivors for me is during a run you reach a certain point where pathing doesn’t really matter. You kind of just stand there and watch thousands of enemies run into your attacks. DRG Survivor’s additional mining and resource collection mechanics make it way more engaging IMO, and the different masteries also make the meta progression feel more satisfying. Super addicting game and I recommend it to anyone with a deck.

Disco Elysium

Everyone’s heard of it. You might watch a video of it and think it looks boring. I implore you to give it a try. The weird characters, hilarious and witty writing, and fully voiced dialogue make this such a beautiful and immersive story to go through. It’s also so good on deck as a chill, slower paced game to wind down with, and the art style really pops on OLED.

Slay the Spire

This game is crack. If anything it’s much worse with a controller vs. a mouse, but this is one of the best games to play on the go of all time.

My Other Favorites

Slay the Princess

This game is best enjoyed without knowing too much about it. It’s a great visual novel type of game where your choices matter, and it’s also well written and fully voiced. Perfect for Deck since the game is not intensive and you just need to select dialogue options. You’ll enjoy this especially if you liked Disco Elysium!

Neon White

Speedrunning FPS game. While I would normally never play an FPS on controller, this game is more about learning and figuring out routes creatively than about precision aiming, though I will say I still much prefer playing this with a mouse. Super easy to pick up the game for a couple levels when you have 15 minutes.

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk

Chill skating exploration game. There’s not really a way to lose this game, you just kinda ride around doing tricks and finding graffiti spots. There are “bosses” but this game is not meant to be difficult by any means. Runs great on deck and I love the art style on OLED.

Gris

Puzzle platformer with beautiful visuals.

Nier Automata

Action game that runs great on deck. I turn on auto shooting so it’s pretty mindless, and just enjoy the music and story.

Firewatch

Another great looking story game that’s mainly focused on dialogue rather than moment to moment gameplay.

Tetris Effect Connected

You’re probably thinking, “isn’t Tetris super old and boring at this point”. The way they synchronize the visuals and music with the Tetris gameplay here is mindblowing. Looks amazing on OLED.
