I don’t get it. Why do so many of Perth’s newer suburbs look like barren wastelands? It’s like the planners just forgot what trees are. You move into these places expecting a nice, livable environment, but all you get is scorching heat, concrete, and tiny strips of fake plastic grass. Where’s the shade? Where’s the greenery? We live in Australia, for crying out loud—it gets hot!

Walking outside during summer feels like stepping into a furnace, and without trees, there’s no relief. The older suburbs have beautiful tree-lined streets, parks with real shade, and a sense of nature. But these new developments? Nothing but cookie-cutter houses crammed together with barely enough space for a proper tree to grow.

The council can’t keep ignoring the fact that trees are essential for livability. They cool the streets, improve air quality, and give people a place to walk without feeling like they’re in a desert. Planting a couple of saplings here and there isn’t going to cut it, either. We need proper investment in urban greening.

Am I the only one who feels this way? It’s like these new suburbs are being designed for short-term gain and zero long-term vision.
